In this land of heartbreak,
Over and over it's the same mistake.
When it gets tough, the tough keeps going,
Like the wind that just keeps blowing.
In 2002 my baby girl was born.
A few years later she loved princesses and unicorns.
I can still hear her sweet little squeaks
And feel her lashes brush against my cheeks.
One summer, just me and her at the beach,
I tried to think of more that I could teach her.
But one day that privilege was taken from me
When some kid came to school and shot my baby.
I couldn't stand, I just collapsed.
I know I'll feel the pain no matter how much time has passed.
Feels like I'm stranded on an island in a lake
Somewhere in this land of heartbreak.
Is it too much to ask, lord,
Too much to ask, oh lord?
All I want is justice and peace
And a little gun control, please.
If you can't give my baby back,
Then you must do something, lord,
To cure this land of heartbreak.
